CCCA News

New member organisations in CCCA

Since the general assembly, CCCA has been welcoming two new member organisations. With the Montanuniversität Leoben, all three Austrian technical universities are now represented in CCCA. The Montanuniversität (MUL) is a specialised, internationally renowned institution that has already demonstrated its commitment to climate, environment, and sustainability through its involvement in Climate KIC.

In addition to degree specialisations such as "Industrial Environmental Protection" and "Recycling Technology", climate protection research is already firmly embedded across many departments and institutes. The contact persons are Susanne Feiel (Head of the International Office) and Lorenzo Rieg (Research and Project Manager for Climate KIC).

The Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI) is an independent sustainability research institute based in Vienna. The institute's main areas of work focus on sustainable economic policy and global responsibility, sustainable products and services, and sustainable communication.

The contact persons for all questions regarding SERI and its connection to CCCA are Friedrich Hinterberger (researcher and managing partner) and Magdalena Stocker (researcher and partner).

CCCA Annual Report 2017

For the first time since its establishment, CCCA has produced an annual report to provide a concise and clear overview of its achievements and services, events and collaborations, projects and public outreach, and much more.

This is now set to happen every year, so that visibility can be increased and collaboration can be showcased as effectively as possible.

You can find the PDF download version here, or click on the image!

For Klimatag attendees, the 2017 annual report will also be available in printed form on-site in Salzburg.

Green Meeting

The aim is for the 19th Austrian Klimatag to be certified as a Green Meeting. The Klimatag will therefore be organised to the highest environmental standards, in line with the criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel UZ62 for "Green Meetings and Green Events".

Information for participants

  • Where possible, opt for an environmentally friendly way of getting here by using public transport or carpooling.
  • If you can't or don't want to avoid using a car, or if you're travelling by plane, you can offset the resulting CO2 emissions through carbon offset payments.
  • Where possible, choose an environmentally certified hotel (Austrian Ecolabel, European Ecolabel, EMAS, etc.).
  • Make use of the eco-friendly options offered by your hotel (only changing towels and bed linen when necessary, etc.).
  • Switch off all lights and electronic devices (TV, air conditioning, heating, computer, etc.) when you temporarily leave your hotel room.
  • Reusables = environmental protection: opt for drinks served by the glass, food on proper crockery, milk and sugar without individual portion packaging, etc.
  • Dispose of your waste (PET, glass, paper, metal, batteries, etc.) using the separate collection facilities available at the hotel and venue.
  • Use public transport, cycle, or walk.
  • Where possible, use online registrations and digital materials instead of printed handouts.
  • Bring your own stationery.
  • Please return your badges/name tags to the information desk at the end of the event. · Please also refer to our further guidance at www.uni-salzburg.at/greenmeeting.
  • For questions and suggestions about our Green Meeting initiative, please contact the Green Meeting Officer at the University of Salzburg

The CCCA Writing Workshop continues in May!

On 24 May, CCCA is once again hosting the writing workshop in cooperation with the editorial team at DOSSIER. What makes a good story? How do you nail a gripping opening? And how do you write compellingly about a seemingly dry topic?

In the writing workshop, the speakers will work together with participants on the basics of journalistic writing, learning how to tell stories in an engaging and accessible way. The writing workshop takes place on 24 May 2018 in the seminar room at the Wegener Center, Brandhofgasse 5, 8010 Graz. The writing workshop starts at 09.00 and ends at 17.00.

Please bring your laptop along — we'll be working with you on your texts! The writing workshop is free of charge for CCCA members! Please register by 29.04.2018 at stefan.ropac@ccca.ac.at

FFG with the title "ERA Thematic Dossier on Climate Action in Horizon 2020"

With an eye on the current discussion about the design and direction of the next EU research framework programme (FP9), the thematic dossier recommends an impact-based approach that sheds light on all aspects of climate change and, alongside promoting technological solutions, also drives social innovation and the societal transformation that's needed.

You can access the thematic dossier on the FFG website https://www.ffg.at/europa/analysen_publikationen or at https://zenodo.org/record/1195214/files/Climate_Action_in_Horizon2020_FFG_Th ematic_Dossier_2018.pdf.

News & General

International Conference of the Graz Environmental Law Forum 2018

From 8–10 November 2018, the international conference of the Graz Environmental Law Forum 2018 will take place in Graz under the title "Climate Change, Responsibility and Liability". Experts from around the world will be addressing the topics of responsibility and liability at the legal level, against the backdrop of the challenges and consequences of climate change.

The mix of invited speakers from both academic and practice-oriented circles promises to give an interested specialist audience insight into the latest findings as well as into hotly debated questions (such as the topic of "climate litigation").

The aim of the event is to broaden knowledge around normative issues whilst at the same time creating a platform for intercultural scientific exchange. The conference is being organised in cooperation with the University of Graz, CCCA, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Further information and the option to register will be available shortly at: climate-law-2018.uni-graz.at

JPI Climate: ERAnet AXIS Cofunded Call 2018

Assessment of Cross(X)-sectoral climate Impacts and pathways for Sustainable transformation

Availability: 09.04.2018 17:00 to 09.10.2018 17:00

The aim of this Joint Transnational Call 2018 of ERAnet AXIS is to expand the knowledge base that helps societies in their transition towards sustainability, in particular through an integrated understanding of the social, political, and ecological impacts and risks associated with climate change.

The aim is to contribute to more precise estimates and better quantifiable uncertainties regarding what climate impacts can be expected for different plausible socioeconomic scenarios. Ultimately, the research projects should increase the potential for using climate protection data in operational climate services (e.g. the Copernicus Climate Change Service, C3S) and support adaptation measures in order to reduce vulnerabilities in the future. In total, a funding budget of €400,000 is available for Austrian participants.

Here you'll find information on the transnational call

Kerner von Marilaun Symposium 2018 "Environment and Society"

Since the 1980s, there hasn't been a synthetic report on the state of the environment and natural resource use for Austria. Following on from the Ökobilanz Österreich (1986) and a number of further reports, e.g. the "Nationaler Umweltplan 1995", the Commission for Interdisciplinary Ecological Studies (KIÖS), together with the Commission on Climate and Air Quality (KKL), has developed a perspective paper within the framework of a joint working group.

This paper covers the topics of demography, water, soil, air quality and climate, as well as biodiversity. These are placed in the context of the Agenda 2030 (SDGs). At the same time, an attempt is made to outline the risks in the respective subject areas. It becomes clear that long-term risks should be treated as a priority over short-term ones.

The public Kerner von Marilaun Symposium concludes with a panel and audience discussion.

Registration is required for organisational reasons:

Book Launch: The Routledge Handbook of Ecolinguistics

The Routledge Handbook of Ecolinguistics offers the most comprehensive introduction to ecolinguistics and the ecology of language. The book represents the most important areas of ecolinguistics in a three-part structure.

The first part addresses topics such as linguistic diversity, minority languages, and the loss of biological species, and highlights the connection between the loss of linguistic and biological diversity. This is followed by an overview of the role of language in describing, obscuring and managing environmental problems.

The final part of the book discusses new subject areas and possible future developments in ecolinguistics as a pacemaker for a new scientific age. The handbook is aimed at students and researchers interested in the relationship between language and the environment, language contact and related topics.
