Dear CCCA-News subscriber,
with this newsletter we're kicking off the new year and keeping you up to date with the latest news from the climate research community.
In the first edition of the CCCA newsletter you'll find information on:
We hope you enjoy the read!
On 17 February 2016 at 17:00, the service centre warmly invites all CCCA members to an informal networking evening ('round table') in Vienna. At the venue mittendrin (Währingerstraße 19, 1090 Vienna), participants can get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere and will receive information about current funding opportunities from our guests from FFG, ÖAW and KLIEN. Afterwards, volunteers are welcome to take on the challenge of participating in PowerPoint karaoke.
Details about the event and the PowerPoint karaoke format can be found here or in our calendar. To allow international colleagues to take part as well, we'll do our best to run the evening largely in English (as needed). For that reason, the invitation has also been written in English. Attendance is free of charge — please register by 12 February at servicezentrum@ccca.ac.at. We'd also ask you to share the invitation within your institution.
We'd love to welcome you in person at our event.
New approaches to communicating climate topics. How can we inspire young people to adopt climate-conscious behaviour? Through which communication channels and with which methods can this target group be reached? Following a brief input from Prof. Helga Kromp-Kolb, Dr. Bernd Hezel (PIK Potsdam) will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the "Climate Media Factory" and share some fascinating insights from the practice of climate communication. Over the past few years, the Climate Media Factory has developed a range of climate campaigns and videos that convey climate topics in an entertaining and accessible way (e.g. Earthbook, Banditen in Air City).
Further information about this event can be found in our calendar.
The challenges of climate change call for societal adaptation strategies. In recent years, economic and social losses caused by natural hazards have shown that traditional protection strategies are reaching their limits. The JPI Climate project TRANS-ADAPT is looking for innovative solutions to help society better prepare for future extreme events.
TRANS-ADAPT addresses the question of multi-dimensional use of protection systems. Examples include the recreational use of flood plains, or the integration of protective embankments into urban development schemes. TRANS-ADAPT analyses and evaluates the multiple benefits in relation to social transformation mechanisms within society, focusing on legal, economic, and socio-ecological contexts. A total of ten case studies from four European countries have been selected to evaluate implementation options and societal benefits, and to examine the motivations behind successful initiatives.

As part of the StartClim research programme, projects will be funded for the 14th time in 2016. StartClim sees itself as a programme that helps to get things started. It supports innovative projects that address current questions relating to the national adaptation strategy. These projects should be developed within StartClim to a point where their results can serve as the basis for follow-up applications to suitable research funding bodies.
Research groups working on the impacts of climate change in their respective fields, as well as early-career researchers who want to gain their first experience in climate research, are also encouraged to apply.
The call topic is: Climate Change in Austria – Foundations, Monitoring and Development of Further Adaptation Measures
