Dear CCCA-News subscriber,
a proper summer has come to an end, and with this edition of the CCCA-News we'd like to give you a preview of the 17th Austrian Climate Day in Graz, and draw your attention to the latest information materials on the Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change 2014. We'll tell you about the 1st CCCA PowerPoint Karaoke and, as always, keep you up to date on current projects, calls for proposals, and events.

We hope you enjoy the read!
Preparations for the next Climate Day are already under way! The 17th Austrian Climate Day will take place from 6 to 8 April 2016 in Graz, at the University of Graz.
The tried-and-tested programme will be continued this year, but with a few new additions. Please save 6 April as a Preconference Day. Special programme items are planned for early-career researchers on that day. A networking programme is also in the works for the same day.
The contact persons for the Climate Day are Julia Kolar (klimatag@ccca.ac.at) and Ingeborg Schwarzl (ingeborg.schwarzl@ccca.ac.at). Up-to-date information will be published continuously on the web and shared via our various information channels.
On the APCC website you'll find new information materials available for download! In addition to the assessment report in various lengths, the materials now also include slide sets and video clips for each chapter of the AAR14. Special info clips featuring APCC researchers explain the graphics and content of the APCC slide sets, and are aimed at both the scientific community and the interested general public.
A key output of the assessment report is also the comprehensive literature database, which contains all references cited in the AAR14. You can now access this online too!
Interested in using texts or figures from the AAR14 for your publication or presentation? Information on citation formats and copyrights/conditions for using the graphics and tables can be found on the relevant pages.
A flyer briefly describing the assessment report and the available materials will follow shortly.
This past July, the Climate Change Centre Austria hosted a new kind of networking event for climate researchers at the Scherbenkeller in Graz.
True to the format, the ten participants broke into a sweat — and not just because of the temperatures in the venue. The challenge was to present a randomly drawn slide set from someone else entirely off the cuff, yet convincingly. Those who found themselves faced with a rather text-heavy set drew creatively on their imagination. Others had to find their way through highly artistic graphic presentations.
The aim of this get-together was to give researchers the chance for a relaxed, informal exchange and to share the latest findings on climate change with one another.
Given how well it went down, this new high-entertainment format is set to make a comeback this autumn.
The projects from the 13th StartClim call for proposals: "StartClim2015: Further contributions to the implementation of the Austrian adaptation strategy" have started work. The projects in StartClim2015 address questions that provide scientific support for the implementation of recommendations for action from the Austrian adaptation strategy. This year, five projects across three different thematic areas of the call were funded: "Societal transformation", "Monitoring needs and evaluation of climate change adaptation", and "Cooperation between mountain research and protective forests".
You'll find all the details on the newly redesigned StartClim website.
Horizon 2020 is launching its second major call for proposals for 2016/17. The FFG is offering the following events:
Tuesday, 22 September 2015: "Horizon 2020: Second call for proposals – New research and innovation priorities 2016/17"
Wednesday, 23 September 2015: "The impact in Horizon 2020"
In our calendar you'll find all further information.
The following tenders are currently open at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission:
a) Framework service contract for hotspot monitoring within the global component of the Copernicus Land Service. Bids will be accepted until 25 September 2015.
b) Service contract for the implementation, assessment and development of the global land component of the Copernicus Land Service. Bids can be submitted until 25 September 2015.
c) A further tender concerns the Risk & Recovery component of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. It relates to expressions of interest for the activation of this Copernicus service. More information can be found here
alpS is taking part in the 4th K1 tender call under the COMET programme of the Austrian federal government and welcomes new cooperation partners from academia and industry for projects in the funding period 2017–2025.

In mid-October 2010, the first "Permafrost Austria Workshop" took place in Obergurgl, Tyrol, with around 50 Austrian and Italian scientists. Since then, research in the areas of permafrost and periglacial processes, as well as the associated natural hazards in the Eastern Alps, has advanced considerably. This is a good reason to meet again after 5 years for mutual exchange and to identify further future synergies. Colleagues from neighbouring regions are warmly invited to attend.
In our calendar you'll find all the relevant information on registration and the submission deadline for contributions.
JPI Climate invites climate-related research communities, research funding organisations, policy makers and practitioners to discuss together on how societies can manage data and information to create knowledge (and ultimately wisdom) with problem-solving character. Following the notion of "openness" by the Open Knowledge Foundation, the symposium (22nd and 23rd Oct 2015) will be structured around 3 main issues: Accessibility and availability, Re-use and re-distribution and Universal participation.
JPI Climate is committed with transparency both in its daily business and also by promoting it in the climate research community, and therefore is glad to invite you to this symposium.
For further information, please visit the JPI Climate website (http://www.jpi-climate.eu/news-events/events/10862495/Symposium-Designing-Comprehensive-Open-Knowledge-Policies-to-Face-Climate-Change) or take a look at the symposium's agenda.
The observation of climate with regard to its variability and potential changes has gained considerably in importance, particularly since the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is a joint initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science (ICSU), and was established in 1992. GCOS aims to ensure that the necessary climate-relevant observations and information are systematically collected and made available to all potential users. In order to formally submit the GCOS report, which is currently available as a draft, to the WMO, a metadata survey of the relevant datasets is required. The CCCA Data Centre will carry this out in cooperation with the GCOS Secretariat.
On 24 November 2015, the 3rd GCOS Round Table will also take place at ZAMG in Vienna, and everyone with an interest in this topic or who works with climate data is warmly invited to attend.

The Management & Environment course stands out significantly from other offerings: a well-balanced interdisciplinary approach (management, ecology, law, technology), an excellent and highly regarded teaching staff, the highest academic and practical standards, participant-centred methods with a strong learning impact, and tangible real-world application through course projects, which participants work on in small groups before writing their Master's thesis on the topic.
LAST CALL The next MSc course in Management & Environment starts on 5 October 2015.
Further information about the course can be found in the information sheet or at: http://www.uma.or.at/lehrgang.html
By filling in this questionnaire, you'll be helping to make Austria's energy supply secure and environmentally friendly in the long term! Your responses will serve as the basis for future research activities within our project. The uRbE project is dedicated to investigating the so-called rebound effect.
As a thank-you for taking part, prizes worth a total of around €10,000 are up for grabs. The survey runs from now until the end of the year. The prizes will be drawn among survey participants in January 2016.
VERTICLIM—Atmospheric Vertical Structure and Trends in Climate Data. Goal of this project of the research group ARSCliSys is to gain insight into the vertical structure of atmospheric climate variability and trends from the surface to the stratopause through evaluation of observations, reanalyses, and climate models.
Application deadline: October 4, 2015
