CCCA Updates

Climate capital Graz – Three days dedicated to a sustainable future

From 6 to 8 April, more than 300 scientists, multipliers, administrative staff and Austrians interested in the topic gathered in Graz for the first time to discuss the challenges of climate change and share scientific progress at the 17th Austrian Climate Day.

Climate Day participants were treated to an exciting and varied programme, including the CCCA networking day, a workshop on "Communication for climate protection", a programme for Styrian school pupils, as well as numerous talks on the latest research findings and the art competition "KlimARS 2016".

A review of the Climate Day, the presentations from the talks, and some initial photos are available on the CCCA website.

NEW DEADLINE! The SCIENCE PLAN can still be commented on until 25 APRIL!

The development of a Science Plan for climate research in Austria is entering a new round! We're inviting everyone interested in the topic to comment on the first draft of the Science Plan. This first draft can be viewed on the CCCA website and commented on until 25 April 2016 at midnight.

All information about the development of the Science Plan and the commenting process can be found here.

Factsheets

In 2016 too, CCCA researchers are preparing the results of their scientific work for use as CCCA factsheets. The respective findings are to be presented in a clear and accessible format across two A4 pages (including a figure). The latest CCCA factsheets (N°15 & N°16) cover the topics of "Natural hazards in mountain areas" and present the "Greenhouse gas balance of the Austrian timber value chain". CCCA would like to thank the dedicated authors and looks forward to your ideas for creating a CCCA factsheet.

If you're interested in publishing your research as part of the popular factsheet series (with ISSN number), please get in touch with stefan.ropac@ccca.ac.at.

News & General Updates

ERA4CS Joint Call

On 1 March 2016, the Joint Programming Initiative "Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe" launched the "ERA4CS" Call with the objective of enhancing user adoption of, and satisfaction with, Climate Services (incl. adaptation services). Improving the quality of Climate Services is also within the scope of this call. At the same time ERA4CS aims to improve the scientific expertise on Climate Change risks and adaptation options, and to connect that knowledge with decision-making, e.g. by developing and assessing climate adaptation strategies and pathways at different scales (regions, cities, catchments, vulnerable sectors, etc.). The present joint call will be financed by ERA4CS partners from 18 countries, contributing either by cash funding or by in-kind resources, plus co-funding from the European Commission. A total budget of about € 72 million has been provisionally allocated to this call to support 3 years of research projects. More Information about the Call topics.

The National Contact Point (NCP) for all questions related to this ERA4CS call is:

Who communicates climate topics in Austria?

A project at the University of Innsbruck aims to draw up an initial map of the actors involved – and to help them gain a stronger voice in public discourse. For sceptics, the pitfalls of climate communication begin with the climate community's fondness for abbreviations: it may well be telling that a project on climate communication in Austria has now been launched under an acronym that really packs a punch: C4Austria - Connecting Climate Change Communication in Austria. But the ambitious name matches the ambitious goal: for the first time, an initiative is attempting to identify and network the numerous actors involved in climate communication in Austria.

The project, funded by the Climate Change Centre Austria, is based at the Institute of Geography at the University of Innsbruck. In a first step, it aims to map the actors and institutions that participate publicly in the climate debate in Austria – including NGOs and authorities as well as research institutions. The five-member project team will capture the topics and target audiences of communication, as well as the motivations and competencies of the various actors.

KlimARS2016: Bananas and papaya from Graz

With a "waste heat greenhouse", artist Markus Jeschaunig makes everyday energy waste tangible. This project and two acoustic works took the top prizes at the Graz art competition on climate change.

It's a real eye-catcher: since last autumn, a large, transparent plastic bubble has been clinging to a building niche at Jakominiplatz in the heart of Graz. At night it's lit from within, and tropical fruit plants stand inside. A pineapple and a handful of papayas were recently harvested – at the end of an Austrian winter. Find out more about the winning project here.

Press reports and a forthcoming documentation on KlimARS can be found here.
