CCCA Updates

17th Austrian Klimatag, Invitation & Call for Abstracts

The Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) and the local co-organisers warmly invite you to the

17th Austrian Klimatag

Date: Wednesday, 6 to Friday, 8 April 2016
Venue: Karl-Franzens-Universität, 8010 Graz

Current co-organisers of the Klimatag 2016 are

  • Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
  • Graz University of Technology
  • Joanneum Research
  • University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna
  • Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics
  • Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt

Aims of the Klimatag
The Austrian Klimatag is a scientific conference that also offers programmes for an interested general public and

  • aims to provide an overview of current Austrian research activities in the areas of climate change, impacts, adaptation and mitigation.
  • serves as a platform for exchange and networking among all individuals and institutions interested in climate change.
  • facilitates networking across natural science, socioeconomic, and humanities and cultural studies disciplines.
  • promotes exchange between fundamental research, applied research and practitioners.
  • is open to encouraging and fostering dialogue, discussion and networking between scientific and non-scientific groups.

Call for Abstracts and Registration
Registration for the scientific programme (scientific sessions, Pre-Conference Day) and the social programme (icebreaker, evening programme), as well as abstract submissions, can again be done conveniently via an online portal this year. Detailed information on registration and participation in the 17th Austrian Klimatag can be found on our Klimatag website.

As in previous years, we ask you to prepare and present the results of your research activities and their connections to colleagues from your own field as well as other disciplines. This can be done in the form of a talk or a poster. Please note that an abstract must be submitted for both. Please use the online portal for submissions. Abstracts uploaded there will be reviewed by thematically appropriate reviewers after the submission deadline (12 January 2016). The abstracts will be uniformly formatted for the conference proceedings; in the online registration system you can upload the text components and figures for your abstract separately without formatting.

The Climate and Energy Fund invites all project leaders of advanced ACRP projects to present their project results at the Klimatag in the presence of the ACRP Steering Committee. A separate email with information on this has already been sent to the project leaders of the relevant ACRP projects.

The abstract submission deadline is 12 January 2016.
Registrations for participation will be accepted until 23 March 2016.

Information on the acceptance of contributions and the Klimatag programme will be communicated to submitting individuals by email and published on the Klimatag website, expected by the end of February 2016.

Pre-Conference Day – New at Klimatag 2016!
CCCA warmly invites all members to the first Pre-Conference Day on 6 April 2016. The day is dedicated to early-career support and networking within CCCA. Registration for the "Pre-Day" is available via the online portal. Registration for the individual discussion groups in the programme will be opened once the detailed programme has been finalised (expected mid-December). During the Pre-Day there will also be the option to book rooms for project meetings.

Social Programme
Various social programme elements are designed to particularly foster networking among those interested in climate change. The icebreaker event will take place on Wednesday, 6 April 2016 at Graz University of Technology.

The evening event is themed "Climate, Art & Cuisine" and will take place on 7 April 2016 in cooperation with the "KlimArs2016" competition (see also below). Following the award ceremony, all Klimatag participants are warmly invited to mingle with each other and with the artists over Styrian specialities.

Alongside scientific sessions in which Austrian researchers present and discuss current research findings, representatives from politics, public administration and other areas of society will also be invited to join the discussion at the Klimatag. To further promote exchange between science, politics and public administration, there will be a dedicated workshop in cooperation with the State of Styria.

Funding
The funding of the Klimatag is once again based on several pillars. The State of Styria has provided funding for the Klimatag. The Climate and Energy Fund, as a long-standing partner of the Klimatag, has again been approached as the main sponsor, and the various co-organisers are also contributing to covering the costs of the Klimatag.

Green Meeting
This year we are again striving to organise the Klimatag as a Green Meeting and thus as sustainably as possible. Please support us in this and opt for climate-friendly means of transport such as train, bus or carpooling when travelling to the event.

All information on the 17th Austrian Klimatag will be made available on the Klimatag website and updated on an ongoing basis.

General

University of Salzburg founds spin-off

The University of Salzburg has founded a spin-off together with seven scientists from the Interfaculty Department of Geoinformatics. This marks the first time the university has taken a stake as a shareholder in a company founded by its own staff. Spatial Services GmbH will offer geoinformatics solutions as well as consulting services, and will also be active in research and development. The newly founded company will further develop results from applied research to market maturity and bring them to market in the form of concrete solutions and services.

"By founding this company, we're increasing the added value of the prototypes and workflows we've developed," says Professor Thomas Blaschke, Deputy Head of Geoinformatics and Head of Research Studio iSpace, "we can put applications that we develop in the course of our research activities to lasting use beyond the end of a research project." In addition, products and applications will be brought to market in a relatively short time.

The Knowledge Transfer Centre West of the University of Salzburg supported and accompanied the company's founding: www.wtz-west.at

ÖAW Innovation fund "Research, Science and Society"

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is establishing an Innovation Fund "Research, Science and Society" to support extraordinarily innovative projects from all areas of the Academy.

The objective is to support innovative projects in OeAW's central areas of responsibility. The fund is intended to support, e.g., exploring new research areas that have not been explored so far and have been classified as exceeding the usual degree of openness to results as well as developing innovative methods of cooperation or preparing new concepts of promoting young researchers and women. The central criterion is the innovative strength that originates from the project.

Deadline for submission: 15 December 2015
