14:30 – 17:30 I Parallel Session I    CCCA Workshop for Early Career Researchers "Pathways Towards Sustainability - Technology and Economy of the Future" I Venue: TU Wien Sitzungszimmer AD EG 19, Hauptgebäude, EG, Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Wien

back to overview

How do we want to live in a sustainable future? Who or what even is this "we"? Can technology and innovation save us? And what actually comes after the green transition?

In the CCCA Early Career Research working group workshop at the Austrian Klimatag 2024, we'll be approaching these universal questions about the climate crisis from a wide range of perspectives. Together, we want to create visions for a good future. We want to map out the pathways towards it and negotiate potential conflicts of interest. To do this, we'll be building bridges between technological and societal innovation, between concepts of ethics and progress. How can we, as researchers and citizens, contribute to a just transition? Take the first step with us! Join the discussion with experts from the fields of technology, technology assessment and technology ethics, as well as social and political research and economic transformation. We invite you to an interdisciplinary exchange about the opportunities and challenges of the future - be part of it!

Target audience: PreDocs
Participants: max. 35, first-come-first-served basis
A summary of the workshop including discussion content can be found HERE

14:30 – 17:30  I Parallel Session I Fireside Chat "Science Communication in Transition" I Venue: TU Wien Boecklsaal, Hauptgebäude, 1. OG, Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Wien

back to overview

The Scientists 4 Future (S4F) fireside chat provides an opportunity to share experiences on the nexus between scientific work and public discourse on the climate crisis in Austria.
Together with experienced science communicators, we'll be exploring questions including:

  • What opportunities are there to engage with the wider public?
  • What risks do we need to be aware of when communicating scientific findings on topics that can be politically instrumentalised in any number of ways?
  • What's the difference between educating, instructing, informing and involving the public?
  • Are transformation research, science communication and activism compatible with one another, or do they actually depend on each other?

We look forward to your participation, questions and comments as part of an extensive, interactive discussion round.

Target audience: PostDocs, Professors, Senior Scientists, University Staff
Attendance: limited, first-come-first-served basis

  • Opening remarks from the new Rector of TU Wien, Jens Schneider
  • Discussion with experts from TU Wien, Ivona Brandic, Barbara Laa, Christian Peer, Dominik Stolzenburg
  • Serious and humorous takes on climate change, Science Busters

Climate-neutral neighbourhood development – holistic transformation in the urban quarter

The workshop aims to encourage the sharing of experiences amongst stakeholders within the administration and to strengthen the interface between science and administration.

To kick off the joint discussion, there will be three keynote presentations on key topics around climate-neutral neighbourhood development:

  • New financing instruments (Michael Getzner, TU Wien)
  • Participation and engagement of citizens and stakeholders (Barbara Hammerl, StadtLABOR GmbH)
  • Impact analysis of climate protection and adaptation measures (Tanja Tötzer, AIT)

The subsequent joint discussion aims to sharpen the holistic view of neighbourhood development and support planning and implementation in this area at all administrative levels.

On the evening of 3 April, the TU Wien Kuppelsaal will host the closing of the first conference day. Karl Steininger (Uni Graz & Co-Chair) and Andreas Muhar (BOKU & Co-Chair) will kick off the evening in a lively fashion. Through an engaging dialogue, they'll take the audience on a journey through the contents of the APCC Special Report "Structures for a Climate-Friendly Life". Participants won't just be listening to the content, though — they'll also get to explore it for themselves. The key findings of the report are displayed across 22 roll-ups spread throughout the Kuppelsaal. Ariane Giesriegl (TU Wien & Scientists4Future) will then deliver a short input summing up the importance of inter- and transdisciplinary research and the role of science in society. City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky (City Councillor for Climate, Environment, Democracy and Personnel) will then present the City of Vienna's current climate protection projects before officially opening the culinary part of the evening.
