Climate Review Vienna 2021

Although 2021 didn't reach the extremely high mean temperature values of previous years, it was still far too warm, with an anomaly of +1.3 °C. Low-precipitation conditions from February to April, in June and in autumn were largely offset by heavy rainfall in July and August. 2021 continued the series of very sunny years. The surplus in sunshine hours amounted to 16%. As a result of a prolonged heatwave, June was the fourth warmest, second driest and second sunniest since records began. Over the summer as a whole, 32 days were part of a heat period, compared to the usual six. On the evening of 17 June, a powerful thunderstorm swept across Vienna with locally extreme rainfall in a short space of time, resulting in flooding and power outages...
